What does decarboxylation mean?
Decarboxylation is a chemical process in which certain molecules of a carboxyl group—which contains, among other things, carbon—are separated from other molecules under the influence of heat (or an enzymatic reaction).
The result: The chemical structure of a substance is deliberately altered, which can result in specific properties or effects. This process is not only crucial for activating active ingredients in cannabis. It is also used in other areas, such as food chemistry, to influence flavor development, for example, during coffee roasting.
Why do you need to decarboxylate cannabis?
If you decide to use and apply medical cannabis and purchase cannabis flowers, they contain cannabinoids in their unactivated form (THCA and CBDA). These are the precursors to the active ingredients THC and CBD. If you were to use them, for example, to brew cannabis tea , there would be no effect.
Only through the decarboxylation of cannabis is the chemical structure of the active ingredients altered so that they are activated and you perceive an effect. With THC, this can be a possible psychoactive effect, while CBD can have a relaxing effect.
This process is always required to produce cannabis products such as edibles, extracts, or oils for medicinal purposes. However, it’s different if you want to vaporize cannabis flowers in a vaporizer . In this case, the decarboxylation process takes place directly within the device.
For which forms of consumption and application is decarboxylation necessary?
Prior decarboxylation of cannabis is required if no direct combustion/vaporization takes place during the use of medical cannabis. This applies, among other things, to products such as tablets and capsules, tinctures, or edible products such as cannabis wine gums.
But the subsequent addition to foods like cannabis milk or cannabis butter also requires this process. The same applies if you want to bake cannabis cookies at home or make yourself a tea. In any case, decarboxylation of the flowers is necessary to achieve the desired effect.
Correct temperature and duration for baking cannabis
If you want to activate cannabis in the oven, for example, you must always pay attention to the correct temperature. This is the only way to ensure that the decarboxylation process proceeds correctly.
A look at the two main active ingredients contained in cannabis flowers makes this clear:
- To activate THC, a temperature of 105 to 120 °C is required for approximately 20 to 40 minutes.
- To activate CBD, a temperature of 120 to 140 °C is required for approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
This results in an average temperature of around 121°C and an ideal duration of approximately 41 minutes for the decarboxylation of both THC and CBD to work optimally. If you set the temperature too low, the active ingredients may only be partially activated or not activated at all. If you set it too high, however, they will vaporize and evaporate. This primarily reduces potency and renders your medical cannabis ineffective.
Which methods are available?

These primarily depend on the equipment and utensils available, but also on the effort and precision required. Below, we’ll discuss three common methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
oven
The oven is one of the classic and relatively simple methods for activating cannabis. The cannabis flowers are ground and evenly distributed on a baking tray. Since this method is the most common, you’ll find detailed step-by-step instructions below.
Advantages:
- Easy to implement
- Temperature can be precisely adjusted
- Also suitable for large quantities with one pass
microwave
Microwaving is the fastest, but also the riskiest, method. It requires a heat-resistant glass container into which the ground cannabis flowers are placed. Short heating and mixing intervals are then applied over 1 to 3 minutes to ensure even decarboxylation.
Advantages:
- Very fast
- Easy and possible without any additional utensils
Possible disadvantages:
- Difficult to control, as the devices sometimes work unevenly
- Danger of overheating, which can lead to evaporation/destruction of cannabinoids and terpenes -> cannabis becomes ineffective
Sous-vide method (vacuum bag in a water bath)
This method involves placing the ground cannabis in an airtight vacuum bag. The container is then placed in a warm water bath at a temperature of approximately 95°C. After about 60 to 90 minutes, the cannabis is gently activated.

- Temperature easily controllable and adjustable
- Particularly gentle method
- No unpleasant smells

Special device for decarboxylation

These devices are specifically designed to completely and consistently automate the process. There are no fluctuations or unpleasant odors. Step by step: How to decarboxylate your medical cannabis
As already mentioned, oven decarboxylation is one of the classic methods and is relatively simple and effective. For this reason, we’ve created a step-by-step guide for you that simply explains the process:
- Preheat your oven to 120°C and ensure the temperature remains constant throughout the process.
- Roughly grind the cannabis flower with a mortar or grinder (but not too finely, as small pieces can burn too quickly).
- Spread all the cannabis pieces evenly on the baking sheet lined with parchment paper. They should not be overlapping.
- Heat the whole thing for about 40 to 45 minutes. Stir the cannabis pieces every 15 minutes to ensure even heating.
- At the end of the baking time, check the color. If the cannabis has a light golden brown hue and is dry, you’ve done everything right. It definitely shouldn’t look darker or burnt.
